How often should upholstery be cleaned? This is a common question we hear from our clients. What’s the answer? It depends. For the health of the fabric, it’s best not to clean it more often than once a year. However, if you have children, pets, or sick individuals in the home, dirt accumulates more quickly and may sometimes require immediate attention.
Contaminants on fabric are not just food and urine; we often don’t realize how much dirt is present in seemingly clean fabric. For comparison, a t-shirt we wear for 12 hours is already ready to be washed. So, what about the sofa we sit on for two hours a day, every day, all year round? With this in mind, it’s hard to sleep soundly on a guest bed 😩.
If you have a new piece of furniture, it’s best to impregnate the fabric. This will make it repel water and other contaminants for up to a year. However, for worn fabric, the impregnant will not be as effective and will last much shorter—its effect might disappear even after two weeks!
